Cambodia’s capital city is often your entry or exit point when visiting the country. This offers a perfect opportunity to spend a few days discovering its hidden gems. Here is a non-exhaustive and updated guide to some engaging activities to enjoy during your stay in Phnom Penh.

1. A striking view of the Capital

In the early evening, just after 5 PM, head to the expansive terrace of the Sora Skybar, located atop the Vattanac Tower. The terrace, adjacent to this curving skyscraper, is visible from nearly every corner of the city. It draws attention—and tempts visitors to pause and take in the view. To reach it, you’ll need to ascend all 37 floors of the tower. The panoramic view at the top is simply breathtaking. While the terrace faces west to offer an unobstructed view of the sunset, it also allows you to admire the north and south sides of the city, with a glimpse of the Mekong River to the east. The elegant lounge atmosphere enhances the visual experience.

If you’ve already visited Sora, Phnom Penh offers several other great rooftop options.

2. Discover Phnom Penh’s historical secrets

Head to the National Library, located just across from the Lycée Français René Descartes. There, Mey will assign you a mission. As explorers retracing the steps of notable French figures during the colonial protectorate era, you’ll be challenged to solve a mystery throughout the former French quarter of Daun Penh. Urban Tales offers a captivating and relaxing half-day experience. Armed with a vintage map, compass, and authentic historical documents, you'll gain a fascinating insight into Phnom Penh’s colonial history.

3. Enjoy a night cruise

As you stroll along Riverside in the evening, you may notice boats drifting along the Tonle Sap River and wonder what they’re all about. Along the promenade, you'll find captains offering private cruises—two hours of tranquil sailing between the Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers. These cruises can be fully customized: bring your own food, drinks, music speakers—whatever you need for a peaceful and memorable evening, with Phnom Penh's shimmering skyline as your backdrop.

4. Visit Orussey Market by day

If you're looking for authenticity, Orussey Market is the place to be. It's the largest—and likely oldest—market in the capital. The market is a bustling maze of stalls selling everything imaginable: food, clothing, toys, household goods, spare parts, accessories, even cigarettes. Just one hour inside, and you’ll have had your fill of genuine local culture for the day! To make your shopping experience easier, it’s advisable to learn a few basic Khmer phrases or visit with a local Cambodian friend.

5. Visit Koh Dach

Also known as Silk Island, Koh Dach sits on the Mekong River and can only be accessed by boat. The ferry dock is about 20 minutes north of Phnom Penh, on the road to Siem Reap. Once on the island, you’ll find yourself immersed in rural Cambodian life—red dirt roads, endless rice fields, and traditional wooden stilt houses evoke the charm of the countryside. The island is famous for its local crafts, particularly its silk production, which gives the island its name. Here, silkworms are cultivated and used to produce beautiful woven fabrics on traditional looms.
