From food to textiles, and consumer goods, the markets of Phnom Penh are well-stocked with a variety of products. Explore the Central Market, Russian Market, Night Market, and many more to discover unique atmospheres and bring back your souvenirs from Cambodia.

Particularities of the markets in Phnom Penh

The markets of the Cambodian capital are not all the same. While visiting them, you will notice that although each offers food and shopping, they also have notable differences. Indeed, the types of products sold vary from one market to another. Additionally, not all markets are laid out the same way or have the same size, offering more or less space to wander the aisles. Moreover, since they are spread throughout the city, their locations differ greatly. Finally, the opening hours of day markets can vary, although they are all open daily.

Each market has its own atmosphere

Covered markets in Phnom Penh

The most famous markets in Phnom Penh are the Central Market and the Russian Market, which you’ve likely heard of. But are you familiar with Orussey Market, which is also part of the city’s covered markets? Each of them has its own strengths that appeal to a wide range of people.

The central market

The Central Market of Phnom Penh, also known as Phsar Thom Thmey, is undoubtedly one of the main attractions of the capital. Its iconic architecture provides a large space where many vendors mingle in various areas of the market. Under the dome, you will find a wide range of jewelry and watches, while the four wings are focused on everyday consumer goods. The exterior of the structure is dedicated to clothing and food.

The Russian market

In the midst of this labyrinth of narrow aisles where small merchants shelter real treasure troves, bargain hunters and curious visitors will feel right at home. The market is filled with handcrafted items, figurines, teapots, and other small items perfect for souvenirs from your stay in Cambodia. As you venture further into this maze of curiosities, you will likely encounter strong odors, which are simply due to the dried fish and other foods found there. Despite this less pleasant aspect, the Russian Market offers a friendly atmosphere similar to that of traditional souks.

”Orussey market”

This market, much less frequented by tourists, is an ideal visit for discovering a more traditional market. Here, there are no souvenirs to take home. You’ll find food and textiles, but nothing is tailored for passing visitors, and few merchants speak English. However, it offers an authentic immersion in the daily life of the locals.

Open-air markets

The night markets of Phnom Penh

To avoid the crowds, opt for the night markets. Although they are less diverse in the variety of goods, they do offer the advantage of a more peaceful environment for visitors. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and for instance, you can sit on a "kantel" (កន្ទេល=traditional mat). It’s on this mat that you can enjoy your meal while soaking in the unique atmosphere, with Khmer songs playing nearby.
