Koh Rong Samloem is a beach island and the smaller sister of Koh Rong. Known for its fine white sand banks and warm, crystalline waters, Koh Rong Samloem brings together all the hallmarks of a paradise island.

History

The word "Samloem" carries two possible meanings. The first is "Drowsiness", the second is "Far and difficult to discern". Mystery still surrounds the origin of the word "Rong". According to some locals, it refers to a historical figure, while for others it designates "cave" or "tunnel".

Questions about the spelling of the island's name date back to the 19th century. You may see it written as "Samloem", "Sanloem", or even "Saloem". In reality, all these spellings are correct, with Samloem being the most commonly used by tourists, though it holds no meaning in Khmer, whereas "Sanloem" means "far" in Khmer. You may also hear "Saloem" due to ease of writing and pronunciation.

Geography

Koh Rong Samloem is located 18 km west of Sihanoukville and approximately 10 minutes by boat from its neighbour, Koh Rong. The island itself stretches 9 km long and 4 km wide, surrounded by the waters of the Gulf of Thailand.

The majority of the island is covered in jungle and low mountains.

Climate

Like the rest of the country, Koh Rong Samloem enjoys a tropical climate with a monsoon season.

The winter months are generally the most pleasant for visiting the island. From December to March, expect warm, dry weather with temperatures around 25°C to 30°C.

April is the hottest month of the year, when temperatures can climb to 40°C.

The wettest period falls between August and November.

This little piece of paradise is only accessible by boat. All boats heading to the island depart from Sihanoukville. If you're already at Koh Rong, you can then reach Koh Rong Samloem by private water-taxi.

Two options are available: the speedboat, which gets you to Koh Rong Samloem in 45 minutes. Alternatively, there's the slow boat option, typically fishing vessels making several stops, taking roughly two hours to reach your destination.

Once you arrive on the island, transportation options are limited.

On Foot

The first is obviously your own two feet. With no roads and only a few marked trails, you'll need to venture into the jungle like true castaways!

By Boat

Boat excursions around the island are also available.

Spend a day with stops at beautiful beaches like Saracen Beach, enjoy a leisurely afternoon, perhaps try some snorkelling, and finish the day admiring the sunset.

• Opt for an island tour by boat
• Take a night excursion to witness the bioluminescent plankton
• Go kayaking if you're feeling adventurous

Tips and Practical Information

• There are no ATMs on the island, so bring enough cash beforehand.
• Some establishments lack electricity, or at least don't have it available all day. Consider bringing a book and packing accordingly.
• Restaurant options are limited, with just a few establishments, guesthouses, and a single small kiosk at M'Pay Bay near the pier.
• Book your accommodation in advance, as lodging is scarce and you may be disappointed during high season!
• Bring a headlamp—it's invaluable in case of power outages.
