Learning Khmer Cuisine in Siem Reap

May 20 2025

The city of Siem Reap is inseparable from any successful trip to Cambodia. Just on the doorstep of the majestic Angkor archaeological complex, the city also offers a wide range of fun and unique activities. One of the most popular among travelers is traditional Khmer cooking classes—an experience that allows full immersion in Cambodia’s rich culinary heritage, widely recognized throughout Southeast Asia. Aprons on—now it’s your turn!

Chances are, while wandering through the Kingdom, you've already wondered how to master those woks or perfectly season the Cambodian dishes you've been enjoying in local restaurants and street food stalls. Lok lak, amok, phlea sach ko, and kor ko soup will soon hold no secrets for you. To offer a refreshing alternative to temple visits, our local travel agency can arrange a full morning dedicated not only to the preparation, but also the tasting, of your very own Khmer creations.

A three-step culinary journey

Once you’ve decided to dive into this gastronomic adventure, know that the menu often changes with the seasons. For example, you might prepare spring rolls as a starter, the famous fish amok as your main course, and fried bananas for dessert.

The first step of your experience takes you to Siem Reap’s Old Market, located just a few hundred meters from the kitchen. Here, guided by your instructor and the Chef who will be with you throughout, you’ll purchase all the ingredients needed to make your meal. You’ll also learn a great deal about the spices, fruits, and vegetables that are typical in Khmer cooking and widely found in Cambodian markets. Feel free to ask all the culinary questions that have been on your mind since arriving in Cambodia!

Next stop: the kitchen! These clean, modern facilities provide everything you need to work with the fresh ingredients you’ve just selected. The Chef will choose your three-dish menu (such as the one mentioned above), guide you step by step, and share insights and tricks of Khmer cooking along the way.

Once your culinary creations are complete and you've shared a great moment with your instructor, it’s time to head to the shaded garden of the property, where a beautifully set table awaits. Enjoy this peaceful setting as you taste the fruits of your labor.

To wrap up the morning, the welcoming team presents you with a gift box of spices, a certificate of completion, and a Khmer recipe booklet so you can recreate the magic once you're back home.
