Massage in Cambodia: our tips

Mar 20 2025

As we all know, massage is a source of well-being. Very popular with tourists visiting Cambodia, you will find a large number of small spas offering "massages" for just a few dollars. But what can you really expect in these salons? What exactly is a Khmer massage? We will explain everything about massage practices in Cambodia.

Each type of massage has its benefits

In reality, the term "massage" is often used incorrectly. It should only be used when performed by a physiotherapist. When performed by non-medical professionals, it's referred to as "modeling." Massages and modeling are widely appreciated for relaxing both the body and mind, and they offer numerous often unknown benefits. Here is an overview of some of the most well-known types of massage practiced worldwide, providing well-being for your body and mind.

Shiatsu Massage

Originating from Japan, the shiatsu massage involves applying finger pressure to the body's meridians. It is practiced in various forms, all aimed at balancing the body's energy (chi). Its benefits are numerous and help reduce stress and tension, as well as alleviate physical and psychological pain. Although not scientifically recognized in France, it is considered a form of medicine in Japan.

Swedish Massage

Created two centuries ago by Swedish Physician Per Henrik Ling, Swedish massage is ideal for athletes. It focuses on relaxing muscles and joints to improve blood circulation and muscle elasticity while eliminating toxins. This type of massage is suitable for all ages, though it is strongly discouraged for people with hypertension, hypotension, or heart problems since it affects blood circulation.

Balinese Massage

The Balinese massage is a fusion of various Asian techniques, but it is closer to Ayurvedic practices. Using plant oils, it promotes relaxation of the body and also targets fatty tissue through drainage. The only contraindication is that it is not recommended for pregnant women due to its energetic nature.

Thai Massage

Traditional Thai massage, also known as Nuad Boran, was originally developed in Buddhist temples to relax muscles after meditation. Combining Ayurvedic and Chinese techniques, its benefits are varied. It helps treat various ailments, relieve blockages, and address insomnia and stress. However, it is also not recommended for pregnant women or people with heart issues because of its vigorous techniques.

What massages are offered in Cambodia?

What about the Khmer Massage?

The Khmer massage is similar to Shiatsu in many ways as it works on the body's energy through meridians. Used for centuries, it helps reduce stress, physical and mental fatigue, and more. This type of massage follows strict steps, distinguishing it from Japanese massage.

How does a massage in Cambodia work?

When you arrive at the salon, you will be asked to remove your shoes. A wide range of massages will be offered, in addition to the traditional Khmer massage. Depending on your needs, you can choose from Swedish, Shiatsu, or oil massages. Massages generally last 30 minutes for the shortest treatments (targeting specific areas like the back or feet) and up to three hours for the most complete treatments. Prices vary based on the duration and areas treated, generally starting at $5 for half an hour. Spas typically close around 11 pm, allowing you to enjoy your day fully.

How to choose the right spa?

Not all spas in Cambodia are created equal. To avoid disappointment, it’s wise to use an online comparison tool to verify that quality body care is provided by qualified professionals. The overall appearance of the spa can also be a good indicator of cleanliness. Renowned establishments like Bodia Spa or Champei are safe bets, but don’t hesitate to try the spas at certain hotels, which are often more affordable while still offering high-quality facilities and equipment.
