Overview of 5 Art galleries to discover in Phnom Penh

May 21 2025

Less well-known than the architecture of temples and pagodas or the famous Apsara dances, Khmer painting and sculpture are nonetheless an integral part of Cambodia’s rich artistic heritage. The Kingdom boasts a diverse and vibrant art scene.

Art in Cambodia also flourishes through a number of galleries ranging from traditional to contemporary. Here’s a brief overview of some key players in Phnom Penh’s artistic landscape.

Traditional Art galleries

The National Museum

The National Museum of Phnom Penh is undoubtedly a key repository of Khmer art across the ages. Beyond being a remarkable architectural landmark, it houses numerous sculptures with religious themes—such as representations of Ganesh—among many others. The museum also features furniture, ceramics, paintings, and various works of art that have endured through centuries.

Street 178

Located just off the National Museum, Street 178 is without question the most well-known artery in Phnom Penh for visiting traditional art galleries. These small and seemingly modest galleries are home to a wide array of artwork: statues of all sizes, paintings depicting local life, and iconic Cambodian landmarks. Many painters and sculptors work right outside their galleries, offering visitors a rare opportunity to observe them in action.

Contemporary interpretations of Khmer Art

Sa Sa Bassac

Founded in 2011, SA SA BASSAC is dedicated to promoting the work of Cambodian artists in a contemporary gallery setting. It also serves as a documentation resource. The venue regularly hosts public events and programs, contributing to the dynamic cultural fabric of Phnom Penh.

The French Institute of Cambodia

The French Institute of Cambodia (IFC) was one of the pioneers of Phnom Penh’s post-conflict cultural revival, becoming one of the first art centers to reopen after Cambodia's turbulent history. Today, the IFC is a cultural landmark in its own right. It hosts a variety of language and art-related events, including exhibitions held throughout the year. Currently, visitors can enjoy the Photo Phnom Penh Festival, organized by the IFC, running until November 5.

Din Art Gallery

Din, whose real name is Teang Borin, is a painter from the Kampot region. Formerly an architect, he decided to fully dedicate himself to painting by opening his own art gallery. His work now primarily explores Cambodian society and religion through a contemporary lens.

L'Estampe

Located on Street 19, L’Estampe showcases a wide selection of artworks and decorative objects, making it a great spot to pick up a unique and artistic souvenir from your trip to Cambodia.
