Phnom Penh: 3 must-do excursions around the Cambodian capital

Mar 13 2025

Staying in Phnom Penh for a few days? Already visited the city? Why not take the opportunity to go on excursions around the Khmer capital? Today, we suggest three must-visit destinations that combine culture, nature, and craftsmanship during your stay in Phnom Penh.

Oudong and its magnificent temple

Located about 40 kilometers north of Phnom Penh, this small town was considered the capital of Cambodia for 250 years. Relatively unknown to tourists, it is the perfect place to discover a piece of Cambodian history in peace. While there, you can visit the majestic Oudong Temple, perched on the mountain, offering a breathtaking panoramic view. However, to enjoy this privilege, you will need to climb the 509 steps leading up to the temple. A pair of socks will be useful for this small ascent since shoes must be left before the last stairs leading to the religious monument. Once you reach the top, you can marvel at the unique and grand architecture of the temple, along with the stunning view of the surrounding landscapes and pagodas. Plan for about an hour and a half to explore the site, and make sure to take the time to visit Oudong's typical market. The change of scenery is guaranteed !

To continue with this sense of awe in the face of such beauty, you can continue your journey for a few more minutes and visit the Phnom Reap Temple, which rivals the famous Angkor site.

Tonlé Bati & Phnom Chisor: Two excursions in one

What is Tonlé Bati ?

Tonlé Bati is located in the Takéo province, about 40 kilometers south of Phnom Penh, and refers to the lake located there. Many Khmers visit on weekends to relax by the lake or enjoy water activities. Nearby, you can also explore the Tonlé Bati Pagoda and the Ta Prohm Temple in peace, taking beautiful photos of your trip.

Phnom Chisor

Continuing your journey south for about 20 kilometers, you can reach the summit of Phnom Chisor. This site is unlike any other, consisting of several Khmer pagodas and religious monuments at an altitude of approximately 130 meters.

Silk Island: The silk weaving Island

Looking to escape Phnom Penh for an afternoon? Want to discover the surrounding nature? It might seem tricky at first since the Cambodian capital lacks parks. However, have you heard of Silk Island, or Koh Dach? Silk Island is the name of this peaceful little island in the Mekong River, surrounded by greenery and known for its silk weaving. You can visit silk farms and learn about the entire handmade fabric production process. Silk weaving is an integral part of daily life on the island, so you will notice that every household is equipped with weaving looms. After the visit, take a walk, bike ride, or tuk-tuk tour to explore the surrounding landscapes, which are completely different from the urban setting of Phnom Penh. To reach Silk Island, a short ferry ride is required to cross to the opposite shore.
