Siem Reap: “Phare Circus,” a circus like no other

Feb 27 2025

A circus performance unlike anything you’ve ever seen – does that sound appealing? When we hear the word circus, our imagination often conjures up images of tigers, clowns, and a world for children! However, at “Phare Circus,” the more appropriate term would be “show,” as various artistic disciplines such as music, theater, and dance blend together to create the performance. Here, the circus is not just for children. Adults will be equally charmed by the talent and overflowing energy of the artists from the association.

An association dedicated to education

Since 1994, the Phare Ponleu Selpak Association (PPSA), also known as "The Brightness of the Arts," based in Battambang, has been using art as a catalyst for social and human development. Their mission? To provide artistic education to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, offering them career opportunities in various artistic fields.

There are still significant social issues (such as drugs, domestic violence, etc.) that many children face every day. This is why the association actively participates in the child protection program. It also enables them to receive solid education in the field of performing arts. Today, nearly 1,500 young people benefit from the program established by “Phare Circus.”

A solidarity shop for Khmer handicrafts

Before entering the tent where the show takes place, you will come across the association’s shop. From Khmer jewelry to clothing and decor, you will find all kinds of souvenirs to bring back from your trip to Cambodia, while also supporting the association. This space allows circus students to earn a small additional income through the sale of their handmade items displayed in the shop.

A circus performance at the intersection of tradition and modernity

Around ten artists perform multiple times a week to welcome you and offer you a chance to (re)discover the circus as you’ve never seen it before. For about an hour of surprises and laughter under the tents of Siem Reap or Battambang, you will be immersed in the intimate and warm atmosphere of the performance. While the shows change regularly, they all maintain the traditional circus elements, such as juggling, American rollers, trapeze acts, acrobatic figures, and more. Each performance also includes singing, dancing, and music composed by the Khmer artists themselves, all set against contemporary social issues.

Today, the reputation of Phare Circus performances continues to grow due to the exceptional performances of the young members of the association. Therefore, it is essential to reserve your tickets several days in advance of the show date.
