Thrilling Eco-Tourism with Madame Bo

May 14 2025

Madame Bo’s guesthouse welcomes you to the heart of Cambodia’s countryside, nestled between the provinces of Kampong Speu and Kampong Chhnang. Surrounded by jungles, fields, rice paddies, and mountain peaks, the setting is nothing short of breathtaking. Located just a two-hour drive north of Phnom Penh and close to the Cardamom Mountains, the retreat hosts numerous Khmer and international travelers each year. Four traditional stilt houses are available, offering stunning panoramic views over the fields, framed by distant summits. A range of nature-based activities are available nearby, all recommended by Madame Bo—a certified national guide who speaks fluent French.

It is just a few kilometers as the crow flies from Phnom Aoral, Cambodia’s highest peak (1,813 meters), that Sopheary Bo—better known as Madame Bo—chose to establish her guesthouse. Five stilt houses, aligned in the middle of a restored field that still retains its natural charm, were built in 2017 when she moved in. Her goal: to promote eco-tourism by offering guided tours and excursions focused on environmental education in the Phnom Chriv region. She welcomes you with boundless energy and a desire to share her love for the area, her passion for nature, and the rich history of Cambodia. Over a shared meal or quiet moment, guests often find themselves captivated by her enthusiasm and stories.

The perfect atmosphere: A Mmountain-framed Guesthouse

During your stay in the Phnom Chriv countryside, you’ll spend little time lounging idly. But in the evening, a well-earned rest and hearty meal await. Each house offers a spacious terrace with a sweeping view over the countryside and mountains—a view that soothes and uplifts.

Each evening, Madame Bo lights a campfire in front of the guesthouses—a perfect setting to reflect on the day’s adventures, chat peacefully, and admire the spectacular sunset.

The vegetables and herbs used in meals are all grown in Madame Bo’s lovingly tended garden. During a two- or three-night stay, guests enjoy all meals on-site, prepared by Madame Bo and her family. Only Khmer specialties are served—giving you the chance to discover the rich and flavorful dishes of Cambodian cuisine. The overall atmosphere is refreshing and rejuvenating, providing true rest before continuing your journey through the kingdom.

A seven-tiered waterfall aventure

Madame Bo will gladly recommend nearby activities to complement your stay in this corner of paradise. The main highlight is an excursion to Phnom Chriv, a hill just a few kilometers away.

As you approach the base of the hill, the surrounding landscape is truly enchanting. Fields and palm trees run alongside the red dirt path, nestled between mountain ridges—with Chriv standing proudly in the distance. Your guide will help you navigate the initial steep trails up the hill, leading to the rustic huts of a rural village below the waterfall.

And so begins a real adventure. You’ll find yourself at the base of the first level of a seven-tiered waterfall. From there, the guide leads you through jungle paths, climbing among trees, vines, and rocky trails. At each tier, you’ll cross the river to continue the ascent.

The adrenaline is real, and teamwork comes naturally. Everyone feels a shared responsibility to help the group reach the top. Once at the sixth level, you’ll face a decision: depending on the weather, you may or may not be able to attempt the final ascent. If it has rained or is currently raining, the path becomes too dangerous—better to turn back. But if the sun is out, and the terrain is dry, take on the final climb. Either way, you’ll walk away with unforgettable memories of this journey through a mountainous jungle.
