Traveling two weeks in Cambodia

Feb 24 2025

You are considering spending two weeks in Cambodia, but how can you optimize your time to explore all the best aspects of the country?

To have a fantastic 2-week trip in the land of the Khmers and make the most of its rich culture, Seripheap has put together some ideas for a relaxing two-week journey that blends historical discovery, adventure, and relaxation.

Phnom Penh, the Capital

To begin your 2-week itinerary in Cambodia, immerse yourself in the country’s history. For this, Phnom Penh is the ideal starting point. Indeed, the Cambodian capital has been the site of many tumultuous events, especially since the rise to power of Saloth Sâr, better known as "Pol Pot." To explore the country’s dark past, head to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, followed by the Choeung Ek killing fields. Keep in mind that these places may not be for everyone. If you have a sensitive soul, it might be best to avoid them and focus on the majestic historical monuments instead. As an alternative, you can visit the Royal Palace or the National Museum located just across from it.

After visiting these historical sites, enjoy a pleasant stroll along the Sisowath Quay, a long promenade that runs alongside the Mekong River, and relax in one of the many bars or restaurants while enjoying a drink. Before leaving the capital, take some time to explore these markets: the central market and the Russian market. These are true treasure troves where you can shop for souvenirs.

Off the beaten path in Kampong Thom

Venture out to Kampong Thom, located along the road between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. It’s a lovely stop to discover the rural beauty of Cambodia. The few temples scattered here and there throughout the countryside give you a taste of what’s to come in Siem Reap at the Angkor temple complex. You can rent a scooter and explore the region for a day full of adventure.

Siem Reap and its surroundings

Next, head to Siem Reap, the gateway to the famous Angkor temples. Most visitors who pass through this province rush to visit the site as soon as they arrive, often leaving shortly after.

However, Siem Reap is more than just the Angkor temples. The province has countless attractions that would be a shame to miss during your stay in Cambodia. The ideal itinerary would begin with a visit to the city of Siem Reap, the capital of the province of the same name. It’s known for its old market, colonial buildings, and the famous Wat Athvea Pagoda. Then, embark on a boat trip to explore the floating villages on Tonle Sap. Save the temple visits for the end of your trip. This way, you’re sure to have wonderful memories of the province and enjoy everything it has to offer. In the evening, you can attend traditional dance performances.

Beaches and small islands

There’s nothing better than ending your trip with moments of pure relaxation on Cambodia’s most beautiful beaches. The country is home to stunning beaches where you can indulge in activities such as jet-skiing, scuba diving, windsurfing, or simply sunbathe and relax. Among the most beautiful beaches in the country, those in the resort town of Sihanoukville are highly sought after by travelers worldwide. To avoid the crowds, take a boat to the small islands offshore. Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem are true paradises on earth, offering a beautiful way to conclude your journey.
