Where to go for a drink in Phnom Penh?

Mar 13 2025

For those interested, the nightlife in Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, is quite lively. Similar to the interior and outdoor bars, karaoke spots, and nightclubs, many venues shaped in the Cambodian style resemble those found in France. After reading our article about the best rooftops in Phnom Penh, you may be curious to know where to continue your evening. Here are a few tips to help you choose the perfect spot for a drink.

If you’re staying in Phnom Penh for a few days, you won’t have any trouble finding some great places to brighten up your evenings in the capital. From counters frequented by expatriates offering a well-known ambiance mixed with local products and an exotic outdoor setting, to Khmer terraces illuminated by sepia-toned lights, sometimes tinged with pink, accompanied by music, and even bars with a varied clientele where Khmers and Westerners chat, debate, and have fun over a drink – there’s something for everyone.

Street 214: The Tuk Tuk bar area

If you’re looking for an authentic Phnom Penh night out, opportunities to meet locals, or perhaps a chance to practice your Khmer vocabulary from your stay, you should head to what is commonly and mistakenly referred to as a "tuk tuk bar." This term actually refers to mobile counters that sell alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages during the night, often with a bit of music, found notably in Bangkok. The "tuk tuk bars" or, more accurately, the terraces of Street 214, share some of these characteristics but without the mobile aspect. In this street, you will find several places packed together with just a few centimeters of space between each establishment.

The concept? A small outdoor bar arranged in a tiny hut just a few square meters in size, overlooking a large terrace where charming wooden tables and chairs are set up, all illuminated with yellow, orange, and sometimes pink lights. The atmosphere is warmest around 8 p.m., when young Khmers come after school or work to relax and have fun with friends. If you enjoy alcohol, you can indulge in a variety of cocktails, both frozen and fruity. Don’t hesitate to strike up a conversation in Khmer or English, or offer a drink to join a group of friends and chat for the evening!

Bassac Lane: The Westerners’ corner

You may want to find a place that feels more familiar, ideal for having a drink with friends, a partner, family, or even alone to meet new people and learn more about life in the capital. A great option could be the Bassac Lane area, near the Monument of Independence in Phnom Penh. This street, 308, once part of a very poor neighborhood, has been recently invested by many Western expats, turning it into a laid-back spot where you can enjoy good pizza or have a drink in a somewhat stereotypical setting but one that still holds a certain charm. You can find English bars like the Imperial Bus in the street, Belgian spots like Cloud, as well as Russian, Ukrainian bars, Italian restaurants, and even the 63, a beautiful Khmer house turned into an establishment surrounded by lush vegetation, serving local dishes at a perfectly reasonable price.

A blend of styles

Whether you want to immerse yourself fully in a local culture during an evening out, like you can on Street 214, or experience something more similar to what you might know from France, with the only difference being your geolocation in Cambodia, it can be a difficult choice. Many bars offer a blend of cultures and clientele. For example, Back Street Bar, as its name suggests, is located in an alley close to the Monument of Independence, right in the heart of the capital.

This charming bar offers a friendly setup that fosters conversation and interaction. You’ll notice tables made from enormous semi-truck tires and very comfortable sofas. Don’t hesitate to head upstairs for a round of pool with friends! For alcohol enthusiasts, the bar’s specialty is the Mai Tai, crafted by the owner Thida, who will be delighted to welcome you. Her smile, cheerfulness, and eagerness to chat will make you feel at ease right away. Feel free to bring up any topic of conversation with her, whether in English or Khmer.
