The spirit of travel

The boat rocks gently on the brown waters of the Mekong at Kratié, where the last Irrawaddy dolphins break the surface in a silent ballet. From Phnom Penh to the beaches of Koh Rong, this journey blends ancient heritage and tropical relaxation while crossing the deep countryside of the Khmer kingdom.

Sambor Prei Kuk reveals its pre-Angkorian sanctuaries overgrown with vegetation, before Angkor Wat unfolds its lotus towers beneath the morning mist. At Ta Prohm, giant fig trees embrace the sculpted stones with their tentacle-like roots. Further south, the black pepper plantations of Kampot perfume the tropical air, while the floating villages of Kampong Kleang sway to the rhythm of the tides.

This route traces the history of the Khmers, from the forgotten capitals of the 7th century to the Angkor empire that dominated Southeast Asia. Each stage bears the traces of builder-kings, fishing communities and agricultural traditions that still shape Cambodia today. A journey where pink sandstone temples are reflected in peaceful waters before giving way to the white sand of the archipelago.

Phnom Penh, vibrant capital

Phnom Penh → Phnom Penh

40min4 km

Day trip by tuk-tuk

Let's discover the famous Wat Phnom which gave its name to the capital. The "pagoda of the hill" is the highest point in Phnom Penh.

We then visit the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda, true jewels of Khmer architecture built in the mid-19th century.

The dress code for the Royal Palace is quite strict: shoulders and knees must be covered.

We then visit the National Museum and discover one of the most important collections of Khmer art: 14,000 sculptures and ethnographic objects, most of which come from the temples of Angkor. This jewel of Khmer architecture was built between 1917 and 1920, and features a magnificent interior courtyard, a truly lush garden surrounded by the museum's unique pieces.

Visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21), a former high school in Phnom Penh that the Khmer Rouge transformed into an interrogation, torture and death center. It is the largest detention and torture center under the Pol Pot regime that will reveal to us a very painful chapter in Cambodia's history.

Today converted into a museum, the former S-21 Prison reminds each visitor of the atrocities committed in Cambodia during the terrible years of communist dictatorship. No fewer than 17,000 people were inmates of Tuol Sleng prison, and only 7 survived and can today tell of the abuses they endured. A visit to S21 can be a disturbing and poignant experience that some may not be able to bear. However, it is one of the keys to understanding the hell and madness in which Cambodia locked itself during these years of terror.

Day in the company of an English-speaking guide.

Kampong Cham and Kratié on the Banks of the Mekong

Kratie•Private driver

In the morning, we take the road to Kampong Cham. In Kampong Cham, we leave the city to go to the village of Steung Trong and explore the beautiful rice fields and other plantations (peanuts, jicama or yam beans) in this very fertile area on the riverbank. A little further on, a different landscape unfolds in the Krouch Chhmar district. We set out to meet the villagers during a small 30-minute walk through tobacco crops. A discovery of authentic rural Cambodge.

Kampong Cham → Kratié

2h45135 km

We then continue our journey to Kratié, a peaceful city-province on the banks of the great Mekong with magnificent rural landscapes.

Once we arrive at our destination, we settle into our room for this one-night stopover and can enjoy the rest of the free day to stretch our legs on the promenade along the great Mekong.

Kratié → Kampi

20min16 km

Let's continue with a short transfer to Kampi, a few nautical miles north of Kratié. We board on the Mekong to search for Irrawaddy dolphins, one of the rare freshwater dolphin species, which is endangered.

Optional: if you're sporty by nature, you have the possibility to observe the dolphins by kayak (contact us)

Kampi → Kratie

20min16 km

After returning to solid ground, if time permits, we visit nearby Phnom Sambok hill which houses a picturesque pagoda and a religious community where monks live separately from nuns. We then return to Kratié to rejoin our accommodation.

Stop in Kampong Thom

Kompong Thom•Private driver

Kratie → Koh Trong

10min2 km

This morning, before getting back on the road, we take a small boat to reach the river island of Koh Trong.

We discover this small island on foot or by bike. The river island is a condensed version of magnificent landscapes and a guarantee of a change of scenery. Let's discover the Khmer village and the inhabitants of a timeless island.

Kratie → Kampong Thom

5h25190 km

We then continue on the road, this time heading towards the province of Kampong Thom.

We then head to visit Phnom Santuk mountain, the sacred mountain that brings together pagodas and large reclining Buddhas; the oldest ones have been carved into the rock over time and other more recent ones are simply made of cement. You must climb more than 800 steps through the forest to reach the summit of this popular pilgrimage site in the region. We will probably be accompanied by troops of monkeys. From up there, you can enjoy the view of the vast plains and surrounding countryside.

We are settling in Steung Sen the capital of Kampong Thom province crossed by a river of the same name. Here, with a touch of irony, the inhabitants like to remind us that they too have their "Seine".

Sambor Pre kuk and arrival in Siem Reap

Siem Reap•Private driver

After breakfast, we take the road to reach Siem Reap.

We hit the road towards the temples of Sambor Prei Kuk

At the edge of Kampong Thom, let's discover the formidable pre-Angkorian temples of Sambor Prei Kuk. This archaeological site has been inscribed in UNESCO's world heritage since July 2017 and owes this status to its role as a former capital before the advent of the Khmer empire, which would settle in Angkor a few centuries later. A primordial site at the crossroads of Buddhist, Hindu, animist and even Persian and Greek cultures from the 7th century AD onwards, as we will be able to discover.

We continue with a village tour by scooter (as passenger) lasting approximately 1 hour to discover the countryside of Kampong Thom and its magnificent rural landscapes and to meet the peasants, their animals and the smiles of the children. The path is lined with small wooden houses with roofs made of straw or palm leaves. These traditional houses of typical Khmer style are bordered by waterways.

Ride accompanied by an English-speaking motorcycle guide/driver from the Sambor Prei Kuk community

60 km from Siem Reap, we stop in the village of Kampong Kdei to admire the superb Preah Tos bridge. Bordered by Naga sculptures, this 100-meter-long structure that is 1000 years old is still used by pedestrians and two-wheelers. Once we arrive at our destination, we settle into the hotel; the rest of the day is free at your convenience.

In the evening, we attend an unforgettable circus show with incredibly talented artists!

The circus show starts at 8 PM but it is recommended to arrive 20-30 minutes early. A few activities/shops are also available from 6 PM including a small traditional Khmer dance performance.

Seat included in category B

The Majestic Temples of Angkor

Siem Reap → Angkor Wat

15min7 km

Full-day visit by tuk-tuk of the wonderful Angkor temples located around and inside the Angkor Thom enclosure. We discover in particular Angkor Wat, symbol of the apex of the Khmer Empire during the Angkorian era.

Within the Angkor Thom enclosure, discover Bayon and its many towers with gigantic faces, Baphuon and its gigantic 40m reclining Buddha statue, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of Elephants and its great diversity of sculptures as well as the Terrace of the Leper King.

Let's conclude with Ta Prohm famous for its massive trees with sprawling aerial roots. We can end this day with a sunset either at Srah Srang, or from the heights of Pre Rup or Phnom Bakheng if you are ready to brave the crowds (warning: Phnom Bakheng is off-limits to children under 12 years old and authorities limit access to 300 people at sunset, creating a queue)

Due to an already full schedule, we deliberately skip a few secondary temples from the small circuit such as Banteay Kdei, Thommanon, Chau Say Tevoda or Ta Keo. If you wish to visit these sites, don't hesitate to inform your guide at the beginning of the day so he can best organize the schedule.

Possibility to do the visits in reverse order to avoid crowds. You just need to indicate this to your guide at the beginning of the day.

Temples are sacred places, avoid short clothing, you must cover your shoulders and wear long pants or a long skirt.

In order to preserve these fragile monuments, it is forbidden to touch sculptures or sit on temple elements.

In Cambodian culture, it is offensive to disrupt or act rowdily inside a sacred place, calm and respect are paramount.

It is discouraged to buy items or sweets from child vendors, this only encourages begging and truancy, prefer a donation to an association if it matters to you.

If you wish to photograph the monks (called Bonzes), you must obtain their permission beforehand. Moreover, you must not touch them, they have the right to touch you but not the other way around.

The River of 1000 Lingas and the Pink Sandstone Citadel

After approximately 45 minutes of driving, we begin the day with a visit to the Angkor Centre for Biodiversity Protection. We will be able to see the efforts made by local and international teams to protect threatened local species: turtles and other reptiles, birds and rare mammals. Children and animal lovers will be delighted by this discovery and awareness-raising visit.

We then begin the short hike needed to reach the Kbal Spean site nicknamed "the temple under water", 49 km north of Angkor. Temple ruins dating from the 9th century border a river whose bed is scattered with sculpted lingas. A nurturing source for Angkor, the waters of Kbal Spean once irrigated the rice fields of the ancient city. In its bed, the Khmer carved Shivas and stone squares serving to bless the waters before they reached the Royal City. The site was discovered in 1968 by Ariège ethnologist Jean Boulbet, and following in his footsteps you can wander along the lush banks. A small waterfall near the protected sacred site will allow us to refresh ourselves or even swim (bring a small towel).

Very accessible hike of approximately 1.5 km (or 3 km round trip) with a slight elevation gain over the last 700 meters.

Bring hiking shoes or sneakers as the trail is quite rocky.

Kbal Spean → Banteay Srei

20min14 km

After lunch, let's continue with a visit to Banteay Srei, a temple with human proportions compared to the gigantic Angkor Wat or Bayon. This pink sandstone temple, nicknamed "The Citadel of Women," is renowned for the refinement of the bas-reliefs and sculptures that adorn its walls and columns.

If we still have energy, we can conclude the day by visiting Banteay Samre temple or return to the hotel directly.

30min23 km

Let's relax in the warm and swimming-friendly waters of Snake Island Bay for a fish and seafood barbecue on the boat. We then visit a traditional fishing village where we can soak in the atmosphere and observe the preparation of nets, crab traps and bait while enjoying an iced coffee. Finally, we set off to explore a charming little lost and atypical islet.

The information below concerns travelers who are nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and Canada traveling to Cambodia for a tourist stay. As entry rules may change, we recommend that you verify this information with the official authorities before your departure.

Passport

To enter Cambodia, your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months after the date of entry into the country and contain at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn or altered pages).

Tourist visa

Unlike some destinations, Cambodia does not grant visa exemptions to nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland and Canada for tourist stays. A visa is therefore mandatory before or upon entry into the country.

Several options are available to obtain it:

  • the electronic visa (e-Visa), to be requested online before departure on the official Cambodian government portal (evisa.gov.kh), at a cost of 36 USD (30 USD for the visa + 6 USD processing fee), valid for 30 days from the date of entry;

  • the visa on arrival (Visa on Arrival), available at the main entry points (international airports of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, as well as certain land border crossings), at a cost of 30 USD to be paid in cash, also valid for 30 days;

  • the visa obtained from the Cambodian embassy or consulate in your country of residence before departure.

An extension of an additional 30 days can generally be requested on site from the Cambodian Immigration Department.

The authorities may also request:

  • an exit ticket from the country (return or onward flight),

  • proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay.

e-Arrival declaration (mandatory)

All travelers must complete the e-Arrival declaration before arriving in Cambodia: it is free, is done on the official website arrival.gov.kh and must be completed within 7 days before arrival. It replaces the paper forms distributed on flights. It does not replace the visa: these are two separate procedures. Some airlines refuse to check in travelers who do not have confirmation of their e-Arrival.

It is advisable to keep a digital confirmation or printed copy of any document submitted online, which may be requested when passing through immigration.

Health and vaccines

No vaccination is officially required to enter Cambodia. However, certain vaccinations are recommended by health authorities:

  • hepatitis A and hepatitis B,

  • typhoid,

  • rabies (in case of prolonged stay or in rural areas),

  • update of routine vaccinations (diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles).

A preventive antimalarial treatment may be advised depending on the regions visited and the length of stay. It is recommended to consult a doctor or an international vaccination center before departure.

Travel with children

Minors must hold their own valid passport covering the duration of the stay, as well as an individual visa.

In some European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an authorization to leave the country may be required according to the regulations of the country of residence.

Other nationalities

Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Travelers concerned should inquire at the Cambodian embassy or consulate in their country of residence.
