Preah Vihear Jaya Hotel
Preah Vihear Jaya Hotel
Practical base hotel in Sra Em for visiting Preah Vihear Temple: well-equipped rooms, pool and restaurant serving fresh local market produce.
Preah Vihear Jaya Hotel serves as a base for staying in the town of Preah Vihear, in northern Cambodge. The property offers standard comfort with a swimming pool and restaurant, in immediate proximity to Preah Vihear Temple, inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list.
Why Stay Here
This border province with Thailand remains one of the least visited in Cambodge. Spending a night here is practically essential for anyone wishing to climb to Preah Vihear Temple at dawn or late afternoon, when light best illuminates the bas-reliefs and the heat subsides.
The Jaya Hotel offers a straightforward but well-thought-out formula: well-equipped rooms, a swimming pool to recover from the day's heat, and a restaurant drawing on local market produce. It is not a charming hotel, but reliable accommodation in a region where options remain limited.
Atmosphere and Welcome
Arrival follows Cambodian custom: a cool towel to refresh after what is often a long journey from Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, and a welcoming drink. The building, lacking particular architectural character, prioritizes functionality and cleanliness over décor.
The swimming pool is the hotel's main asset after a day spent on the steep temple grounds. The surroundings remain peaceful, with the hustle and bustle of the small town of Sra Em barely reaching beyond the property's walls.
Rooms and Services
Rooms are equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay:
- WiFi throughout the property
- Complimentary tea, coffee and water
- Balcony or terrace depending on room category
- Television
- Safe
The hotel restaurant serves seasonal dishes prepared with fresh produce sourced directly from the local market. It is the most convenient option for dinner after a day of excursions, as restaurants outside the hotel are scarce in Sra Em. The swimming pool is available to guests throughout the day.
Location
The hotel is located on St 62, in the village of Sra Em (Sra Em commune), Preah Vihear Province. Sra Em is the waystation that provides access to the temple, situated some thirty kilometres further north, on the Dângrêk cliff edge.
Allow a full day of travel from Siem Reap or Phnom Penh to reach the province. Most travelers arrive in late afternoon, spend the night on site, and climb the temple the following morning.
Nearby
Preah Vihear Temple, perched at 525 metres altitude on the edge of a spectacular cliff overlooking the Cambodian plains, remains the primary objective of the stay. Final access is by 4x4 or motorbike taxi from the mountain base, the slope being too steep for ordinary vehicles.
The region also encompasses Koh Ker, a former Khmer capital briefly rivaling Angkor in the 10th century, as well as Preah Khan of Kompong Svay temple, more challenging to reach but still enveloped by forest. These sites can be connected on the return route to Siem Reap and Angkor.
