The Mekong Blue Association - Guide Cambodia - Seripheap

The Mekong Blue Association

The goal of the Mekong Blue NGO is clear: to lift rural families out of poverty by empowering women through education and employment opportunities. This is the daily mission of the organization, which operates in Sre Pro, a village in the Stung Treng province, one of the poorest regions of Cambodia. The volunteers focus on elevating mothers to the role of leaders, thus providing better educational and life prospects for their entire community. Since its founding in 2002, the association has helped 800 women enter the workforce and provided 1,244 children with access to education, benefiting a total of 1,000 families.

A well-designed system

For this humanitarian project, Blue Mekong operates silk workshops in Sre Pro village. The association offers training programs to help women become weavers, seamstresses, or dyers, producing Blue Mekong silk fabrics. These creations have even earned three UNESCO awards and the Southeast Asian Handicrafts Excellence Seal. The training, combined with savings, has allowed several of these women to start their own manufacturing businesses. In addition, the organization is focused on strengthening social protection services for families in Sre Pro, which also includes health education and children's literacy. A primary school that offers free lunches is available in the village, and English and computer courses are offered for those continuing their education. The Blue Mekong clinic, which provides free healthcare, has facilitated a total of 6,220 visits since its inception.

Visitor access

Blue Mekong’s workshops warmly welcome visitors to experience the entire silk production process, from dyeing the fabric to creating new patterns, spinning, weaving, and adding finishing touches. You can also purchase one of these creations by visiting the association’s shop.
