Ang Trapeang Thmor Reserve

Banteay Meanchey Province, located in the northwest of Cambodia and bordering Thailand, offers many surprises for travelers willing to venture off the beaten path. Despite being largely unexplored, the region has several notable attractions depending on individual interests. It has historical sites, such as the stunning temple in the commune of Banteay Chhmar, and a social aspect, with the chance to discover local customs and traditional crafts, like the pottery-making techniques passed down for generations in the village of Phnom Choncheang.

One of the province’s iconic places is the Ang Trapeang Thmor Reserve, which hides many secrets waiting to be uncovered. This sanctuary is home to a variety of protected bird species in a healthy environment ideal for their conservation.

An Ornithological Discovery

The northwest of Cambodia is known for its bird reserves, such as Prek Toal, located by Tonle Sap Lake, where the Osmose association works with local villagers to help conserve the area’s flora and fauna, particularly bird species. Ang Trapeang Thmor is considered one of the most important bird reserves in the region. Located about 60 kilometers north of the provincial capital, Sisophon, and near the village of Banteay Chhmar, it spans 13,000 hectares of woodlands, marshes, and alluvial forests, providing protection for nearly 200 bird species, 18 of which are closely monitored by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Among these is the iconic Sarus Crane, a massive bird with an average wingspan of 156 cm, found in the wetlands and plains of Asia. This reserve is an ideal habitat for the species, ensuring its safe and sustainable development.

How to get there

The heart of the reserve is located about 60 kilometers from Sisophon in Banteay Meanchey Province and 90 kilometers from Siem Reap. You can reach the reserve by tuk-tuk, taxi, or even by motorbike. Once there, you can be accompanied by a guide and, if necessary, a boat captain for navigation.
