Ka Chanch waterfalls

Banlung, the ideal base for exploring the villages of northeastern Cambodia, is also famous for its three waterfalls—especially the enchanting Kachang Waterfall. This little slice of paradise offers a perfect setting for relaxation. Nestled in the heart of the jungle, Kachang is located just a few kilometers southwest of Banlung. Don't miss the chance to visit this natural wonder during your stay.

Discovering Kachang Waterfall

Whether you're traveling solo or with a guide, discovering Kachang Waterfall is sure to be a memorable adventure. On the road through the Ratanakiri region, you’ll have the opportunity to get close to the Laos border at Stung Treng and to meet members of the Tompuon ethnic minority.

A wooden bridge leads to the waterfall and offers a beautiful panoramic view. Alternatively, a path from the parking area takes you to the back of the waterfall, where you'll enjoy an elevated view from above. It’s not uncommon to see local Cambodian families bathing or washing at the top of the falls.

The waterfall itself stands 12 meters high and is set in a stunning natural environment. Downstream, a pool forms a peaceful spot for swimming, while upstream, the waters remain calm and inviting. Upon arrival, you can relax, take a refreshing dip, or simply soak in the peaceful ambiance of the place.

The jungle enhances the scenery, and nearby you'll also find rubber trees, cashew trees, pepper plants, and a few coffee shrubs. Unfortunately, deforestation is advancing rapidly in the Ratanakiri province. Still, the beauty of the site continues to captivate visitors. A bit further away, there’s a picturesque lake worth visiting as well.

Don’t forget to bring a swimsuit and a towel for your visit. It’s also a good idea to carry a compass to help you navigate the red dirt trails, especially if venturing off the main paths.

How to get there

To reach Kachang Waterfall, you'll first need to travel to Banlung. From Phnom Penh, take a minibus to Stung Treng, then transfer to another minibus to Banlung, which takes approximately 3 hours.

Because the roads leading to the waterfall are made of red earth, it's strongly recommended to rent a mountain bike, motor scooter, or pickup truck for traveling through the jungle. You may also have the option to explore the area on elephant-back.

Opening periods

  • The waterfalls around Banlung are accessible year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry season, especially in January. At that time, the roads are more passable and the water in the basin is clearer, making it the ideal season for swimming.
