The Crab Market of Kep - Guide Cambodia - Seripheap

The Crab Market of Kep

On the edge of this small coastal town lies the region’s most iconic attraction, covering an area of 1,600 square meters. Known in Khmer as Psah Kdam, the Kep Crab Market draws thousands of visitors each day. This covered market is separated from the sea by a long wooden pier that stretches across its entire width. It bustles with trade and negotiations and offers an abundance of seafood—most notably various species of crab, but also an impressive selection of other shellfish, mollusks, and seafood products, including the renowned Kampot pepper.

A truly picturesque experience

As you may already know, the crab is the emblem of Kep. A welcome statue, depicting a large blue crab—Kep’s local specialty—stands proudly in the water just off the main beach, bearing the inscription “Welcome to Kep.” Today, this crustacean defines the city’s reputation as a tourist destination. Ask any French-speaking expat where to eat crab in Cambodia, and they’ll direct you to Kep. And if you ask what to do in Kep, the answer will invariably be: eat crab!

Along the wooden pier that borders the shoreline next to the market, local fishermen work throughout the day in search of the blue-clawed crabs that inhabit the shallow waters. From dawn, you can spot small boats and fishing vessels further offshore. The fishing technique remains the same: they use nets. The fishermen often chat about their catches of the day, right alongside you—you’re fully immersed in the heart of their daily activity.

Time for tasting!

After taking in the stunning view of the sea from the crab market and feeling the breeze on your face while watching the local fishermen at work, turn around to explore the market more deeply. It’s teeming with blue, black, and white crabs. You'll also find plenty of other seafood and shellfish. Be aware, however, that the market is quite narrow and often crowded. If you've visited other local markets, you’ll be used to this—but be careful, the floor can be slippery, so watch your step!

Once you’ve finished browsing, it’s time to taste these incredible ocean delicacies. Follow the market road to its end, where you’ll find a row of restaurants that source their ingredients directly from the market. The terraces of these eateries have an undeniable charm, offering views of the horizon shaped by the distant heights of Vietnam’s Phú Quốc Island. Restaurants like Kimly and Holy Crab, among others, serve up their famous crab specialties. Whether grilled, sautéed, or served in a sauce—featuring Kampot pepper, coconut milk, lemongrass, ginger, and a variety of fresh herbs—there’s something for every palate. A meal here is truly worth the detour, and the experience will undoubtedly become one of your most memorable moments from your trip.
