The Pahlung Village in Mondulkiri

The province of Mondulkiri is a land of traditional villages, rolling hills, jungles, rivers, and waterfalls. Ethnic groups such as the Phnong people live here and continue to strive to preserve their culture despite the growing influence of modernization and the gradual standardization of lifestyles across the country.

The Phnong village of Pahlung is located about ten kilometers from downtown Sen Monorom, the provincial capital. It takes roughly fifteen minutes to reach, and it conveniently lies along the road leading to the Bousra Waterfall, one of Mondulkiri’s must-visit attractions.

A remarkable natural diversity

One of the most fascinating aspects of Mondulkiri is the ever-changing landscape, arguably among the most dynamic in Cambodia. Depending on the intensity of the rainy season, the colors of the scenery can vary dramatically. During the dry season, from January to May, the valleys and hills take on warm, yellow-orange tones, resembling the African savannah. The famous red dirt roads blend seamlessly into this dry and natural setting.

In contrast, during and especially after the rainy season, the landscapes transform into a patchwork of vibrant greens, beautifully contrasted against the deep red of the earthen roads. This diversity of colors reflects the incredible geological and geographical variety of the region, encompassing valleys, hills, tropical jungles, forests, rivers, and waterfalls.

An authentic village rooted in tradition

Pahlung offers visitors a genuinely authentic experience. The village is composed of numerous buildings that have preserved the ancestral and historical architecture typical of local tribes such as the Phnong, as well as some Krueng and Stieng families. The traditional houses or huts are decorated in a style inspired by the ancient customs and daily life of these communities.

After returning from your excursion—or following a visit through the village—you will have the opportunity to spend the night in one of these traditional houses, offering an immersive glimpse into the everyday life of the locals.

In the evening, gathered around a fire, you will savor typical local dishes and, if accompanied by a guide, enjoy long conversations with your hosts, gaining deeper insight into their way of life and culture.
