The Prey Basak Tourist Station in Svay Rieng

Svay Rieng is one of the smallest provinces in Cambodia, but it is also one of the most dynamic. Located in the southeastern corner of the country, it borders Vietnam. Commercial exchanges are frequent around Bavet, the pivotal town between the two countries, situated on National Road 1, which connects Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City.

The province has an eponymous capital: Svay Rieng, where traditional Cambodian life is well represented. The change of scenery is guaranteed as you walk through the market, restaurants, and streets. Here, you can find a guide to take you to Prey Basak, a much more picturesque and attractive location.

A Millenary Temple

Your visit will take you south of Svay Rieng city to the Prey Basak station. The area attracts many local tourists thanks to this hill and its forest, which is among the lushest in the country. The marshes and alluvial plains are favored by photographers and attract many species of birds to the region. You will find a picturesque landscape that remains authentic thanks to the surrounding villages, which you can visit with your guide. Statues adorn these villages and are central to traditional and religious celebrations in the country. This provides a great excuse to come and join in the festivities here.

The most mysterious point of interest lies on the Prey Basak hill, amidst the vegetation. Eight kilometers from the Basak River rise the ruins of an ancient temple destroyed during the Vietnam War by American bombings. It is likely the oldest visible temple in Cambodia. Dated to the 2nd century, during the Funan era, it predates the Chenla period, which brought Cambodia some of the oldest temples still accessible today. A rich educational experience, but don’t forget to bring your guide!
