A discreet seaside resort in Ninh Thuan, Ca Na stretches white sand beaches and granite rocks along National Route 1A between Phan Rang and Phan Thiet.

Ca Na is a discreet seaside resort in Ninh Thuan province, in southern Vietnam. Located on National Route 1A between Phan Rang and Phan Thiet, it stands out for its white sand beaches dotted with large granite boulders, in a region renowned for its dry climate and abundant sunshine.

Why visit Ca Na

Ca Na offers a different face of Vietnam's coastline. The landscape blends clear waters, light sand, and granite blocks that punctuate the shore, with a semi-arid hinterland covered in cacti and thorny shrubs in the background. It is one of Vietnam's driest zones, making it a cherished stop outside the rainy season.

The area remains largely untouched by international tourism, making it a peaceful stopover between major southern beach destinations like Mui Ne and the Cham sites of Ninh Thuan. Travelers come here for swimming, photography, and the unhurried rhythm of nearby fishing villages.

History and Cham heritage

Ca Na is connected to the former territory of the Champa kingdom, which long dominated central and southern Vietnam. Once renowned for the richness of its wildlife that attracted Cham princes to hunt tigers, elephants, and rhinoceroses, the area has since lost its large mammals, but Cham memory remains deeply embedded in neighboring Ninh Thuan province, where sanctuary towers and traditional villages still survive.

This legacy also explains the dry and mineral character of the landscape: Cham culture developed on these arid lands, adapting to an environment very different from the Mekong Delta or Tonkin.

What to see and do

  • The beach and its rocks: the main attraction remains the coastline, where enormous granite blocks rise from clear waters. Swimming is possible on most sections, though currents should be watched.
  • Fishing villages: the coastal hamlets nearby preserve artisanal fishing traditions, with traditional round boats and morning markets.
  • The semi-arid hinterland: nearby hills, covered in cacti and prickly pears, offer views over the bay and an atypical Vietnamese landscape.
  • Cham sites in Ninh Thuan: about an hour's drive away, the Po Klong Garai and Po Rome towers complement the cultural visit.

When to go

The Ninh Thuan / Binh Thuan region is one of the driest in the country. The most favorable season spans broadly from December to April, with clear skies and calm seas. From May to October, showers are possible but often brief, and temperatures remain high year-round. Avoid tropical storm periods in late summer for swimming.

Practical information

  • Recommended duration: a half-day to a full day is enough to enjoy the beach; an overnight stay allows you to continue on to the Cham sites.
  • Accommodation: options are limited, with a few mid-range hotels and resorts along the roadside.
  • Dining: seafood in small local restaurants, at moderate prices.
  • To bring: sun protection, water, sturdy shoes for walking on rocks.

How to get there

Ca Na is located on National Route 1A, the main highway running along Vietnam's southern coast. The resort is accessible:

  • From Phan Rang (Ninh Thuan): about 30 km south, by car or bus.
  • From Phan Thiet / Mui Ne: allow about 100 km to the northeast.
  • From Ho Chi Minh City: plan for a full day's drive or take the train on the North-South line, which serves Ca Na via a small local station.

A private car with driver remains the most flexible option for a short stop on the coastal route.

Combine with nearby attractions

  • Phan Rang and the Cham towers: the historic heart of Champa with several sets of sanctuary towers.
  • Mui Ne: a well-known seaside resort famous for its red and white sand dunes.
  • Phan Thiet: a lively coastal town and convenient gateway to the entire region.
