Lifting rural families out of poverty by empowering women to access education and employment. This is the daily mission of the Mekong Blue NGO, operating in Sre Pro, a village in Stung Treng province, one of Cambodia's poorest regions. The volunteers are committed to positioning mothers as catalysts for change, creating better learning and life opportunities for entire communities. Since its founding in 2002, the association has enabled 800 women to enter the workforce and provided 1,244 children with access to school education. In total, 1,000 families have benefited from the organization's work.
A well-oiled operation
For this humanitarian project, Mekong Blue operates silk weaving workshops in the village of Sre Pro. Association members offer training programs that enable women to become weavers, seamstresses, and dyers, producing Mekong Blue silk textiles. These creations have earned three UNESCO awards and the Seal of Excellence for Southeast Asian handicraft products. The skills and savings gained have already allowed several of these artisans to open their own manufacturing businesses. The association also works to strengthen social protection services for Sre Pro families, including health education and children's literacy programs. A primary school offering free meals is available to village children, with English and computer courses provided to support their further education. The Mekong Blue clinic, which offers free medical care, has recorded 6,220 visits since its establishment.
