The spirit of travel

The aromas of the famous Kampot pepper perfume the street markets while the giant shrimp from Tonlé Sap Lake sizzle on the grills of street vendors. This gastronomic circuit takes you from the royal palaces of Phnom Penh to the floating villages of Kampong Kleang, from the pre-Angkorian temples of Sambor Prei Kuk to the majestic sanctuaries of Angkor Wat, each stage revealing the culinary secrets of the Khmer kingdom.

The road winds between golden rice fields and century-old pagodas, from the vibrant capital to the peaceful countryside of Battambang explored by bike. In Takéo, fishermen pull up their nets loaded with "Mekong Maidens," these prized fish that local chefs prepare according to ancestral recipes. Kampot unveils its plantations of climbing pepper plants and its freshly caught crabs in the brackish waters of the coast.

This land carries within it the heritage of the Khmer Empire, visible in every bas-relief of Angkor and every gesture of the artisans who perpetuate the culinary traditions passed down from generation to generation. A journey where each flavor tells a thousand years of Cambodian history.

Phnom Penh, vibrant capital

Let's start the day with the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda, true jewels of Khmer architecture built in the mid-19th century.

The dress code for the Royal Palace is quite strict: shoulders and knees must be covered.

We then visit the National Museum and discover one of the most important collections of Khmer art: 14,000 sculptures and ethnographic objects, mostly from the temples of Angkor. This jewel of Khmer architecture was built between 1917 and 1920, and features a magnificent interior courtyard, a true lush garden surrounded by the museum's unique pieces.

Visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21), a former high school in Phnom Penh that the Khmer Rouge transformed into an interrogation, torture and death center. It is the largest detention and torture center under the Pol Pot regime that will reveal to us a very painful chapter in Cambodia's history.

Today converted into a museum, the former S21 Prison reminds every visitor of the atrocities committed in Cambodia during the terrible years of communist dictatorship. No fewer than 17,000 people were inmates of Tuol Sleng prison, and only 7 survived and can today recount the abuse they suffered. A visit to S21 can be a disturbing and poignant experience that some may not be able to bear. However, it is one of the keys to understanding the hell and madness in which Cambodia locked itself during these years of terror.

Sambor Prei Kuk•Driver Excursion 2-4 days

Phnom Penh → Skun

1h3179 km

Road transfer to Kampong Thom halfway between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. On the way, be bold to make the most of a brief "gastronomic" stop in the town of Skun, famous for its fried spiders and insects.

Skun → Sambor Prei Kuk

2h05122 km

We then visit Phnom Santuk mountain, the sacred mountain which brings together pagodas and large reclining Buddhas; the oldest ones have been carved into the rock over time and more recent ones are simply made of cement. You must climb more than 800 steps through the forest to reach the summit of this popular pilgrimage site in the region (motorbike taxi available as an alternative). We will probably be accompanied by troops of monkeys. From up there, you can enjoy the view of the vast plains and surrounding countryside.

Let's discover the magnificent pre-Angkorian temples of Sambor Prei Kuk. This archaeological site has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since July 2017, owing to its status as a former capital before the advent of the Khmer Empire, which would later settle in Angkor a few centuries later. A pivotal site at the crossroads of Buddhist, Hindu, animist and even Persian and Greek cultures from the 7th century AD onwards, as we will be able to discover.

Let's conclude this day with a scooter tour (as passenger) of around 1 hour to discover the countryside of Kampong Thom and its magnificent rural landscapes and to meet the farmers, their animals and the smiles of the children. The trail is lined with small wooden houses with thatched roofs or palm leaf roofs. These traditional houses in typical Khmer style are bordered by waterways. Let's especially enjoy the superb sunset over the rice fields. Ride in the company of an English-speaking guide/motorbike driver from the community.

The motorbikes will drop us at our host's place who will have prepared dinner for us.

The majestic temples of Angkor

A day of visiting wonderful Angkor temples by tuk-tuk located around and inside the Angkor Thom enclosure. We discover in particular Angkor Wat, symbol of the apex of the Khmer Empire during the Angkorian era.

Within the Angkor Thom enclosure, discover Bayon and its numerous towers with gigantic faces, Baphuon and its gigantic 40-meter reclining Buddha statue, Phimeanakas, the Elephant Terrace and its great diversity of sculptures as well as the Terrace of the Leper King.

Let's conclude with Ta Prohm famous for its immense trees with tentacular aerial roots. We can end this day with a sunset either at Srah Srang, or from the heights of Pre Rup or Phnom Bakheng if you are ready to brave the crowds (note: Phnom Bakheng is off-limits to children under 12 years old and authorities limit access to 300 people at sunset, creating a queue)

Due to an already busy schedule, we deliberately skip a few secondary temples from the small circuit such as Banteay Kdei, Thommanon, Chau Say Tevoda or Ta Keo. If you wish to visit these sites, do not hesitate to inform your guide at the beginning of the day so he can best arrange the schedule.

Possibility to do the visits in reverse order to avoid crowds. Simply inform your guide at the beginning of the day.

The temples are sacred places, avoid short clothing, you must cover your shoulders and wear long pants or a long skirt.

In order to preserve these fragile monuments, it is forbidden to touch sculptures or to sit on temple elements.

In Cambodian culture, it is offensive to misbehave inside a sacred place, calmness and respect are key values.

It is not recommended to buy items or sweets from child vendors, this only encourages begging and truancy, prefer a donation to an association if you care about it.

If you wish to photograph the monks (called Bonzes), you must obtain their permission beforehand. Furthermore, you must never touch them, they have the right to touch you but not the other way around.

In the evening, on the lovely stage set up at the Angkor Village resort, we attend a dinner show featuring traditional dance. Dancers, singers and musicians present a selection of the most famous Cambodian classical and folk dances to take you on a journey from the Angkorian palaces to today's villages. Traditional Khmer menu; vegetarian menu and tapas available upon request

The River of a Thousand Lingas and the Pink Sandstone Citadel

After approximately 45 minutes of driving, we start the day with a visit to the Angkor Centre for Biodiversity Protection. We will be able to see the efforts made by local and international teams to protect threatened local species: tortoises and other reptiles, rare birds and mammals. Children and animal lovers will be delighted by this visit of discovery and awareness.

We then begin the short hiking trail needed to reach the Kbal Spean site nicknamed "the temple under water", 49 km north of Angkor. Ruins of temples dating from the 9th century border a river whose bed is scattered with carved lingas. A nourishing source for Angkor, the waters of Kbal Spean once irrigated the rice fields of the ancient city. In its bed, the Khmers carved Shiva and stone squares used to bless the waters before they reached the Royal City. The site was discovered in 1968 by French ethnologist Jean Boulbet, and following in his footsteps you will be able to wander along the lush banks. A small waterfall near the sacred protected site will allow us to refresh ourselves and even bathe in it (bring a small towel).

A very accessible hike of approximately 1.5 km (or 3 km round trip) with a slight elevation gain over the last 700 meters.

Bring hiking shoes or sneakers as the trail is quite rocky.

Kbal Spean → Banteay Srei

20min14 km

After lunch, let's continue with a visit to Banteay Srey, a temple on a human scale compared to the gigantic Angkor Wat or Bayon. This pink sandstone temple, nicknamed "The Citadel of Women," is renowned for the refinement of the bas-reliefs and sculptures that adorn its walls and columns.

If we have energy left, we can conclude the day with a visit to Banteay Samre temple or return to the hotel directly.

After nightfall, we discover Siem Reap at night by Vespa, traveling through the city with a variety of stops to eat, drink and discover local Khmer nightlife. This gastronomic tour will cover unusual snacks sold by street vendors, but we will also introduce you to classic flavors of Cambodian cuisine and local barbecue. We will interact with locals while exploring a lively fair with a mix of games and activities. This Siem Reap After Dark Vespa tour embraces the traditional and modern sides of the city, resulting in a fun and varied experience that embodies the fun nature of the wonderful Cambodian people.

Transfer to Battambang

Siem Reap → Battambang

3h165 km

After breakfast, transfer by road to Battambang.

Before going to the hotel, discover the Wat Slaket pagoda and Ek Phnom, an 11th century sandstone Brahmanical temple now in ruins. It was ransacked by the Khmer Rouge under Pol Pot, and looted by the Vietnamese at liberation. A place full of history. Take the opportunity to linger over the immense statue of the seated Buddha that stands near these ruins.

After check-in and lunch, we can rest for a few hours before leaving in mid-afternoon south of Battambang to visit the Banon temple erected at the top of a hill and which offers, after climbing 358 steps, a lovely panorama of the Cambodian countryside. Passing through traditional villages lining the road, you can witness the family production of rice cakes and chat with locals about their daily lives.

We then discover Phnom Sampov, "the ship-hill" where we stay until sunset to observe the flight of bats and their incredible choreography across the sky. Day without English-speaking guide. Return to the hotel.

Pepper & Salt Day in Kampot

Kep → Kampong Trach

33min26 km

On the way, near Kep, exploring the caves of Phnom Kampong Trach will hold some lovely surprises for you. Considered as natural temples by local Buddhists, they hide numerous statues and altars. As the highlight of this "speleological" excursion, a beautiful representation of a reclining Buddha awaits you in a clearing open to the sky created by the collapse of the rock.

The Kampot region is internationally recognized for its exceptional pepper. It is therefore impossible to visit Kampot without taking a tour of one of the region's numerous pepper plantations! We then visit the famous family-run pepper production farm, La Plantation, with one of their English-speaking guides who will explain the origins and reasons for the fame of this pepper. We will learn more about the cultivation methods and how to cook this famous pepper.

After lunch (included at the plantation), on the way back to the hotel, we can stop at Secret Lake to admire the landscape. On the return from the plantation, let's stop for a moment at the salt marshes to discover how the region produces this precious condiment and preservative. They are located close to Kampot, on the coastal road, and the afternoon light is often ideal for observing or photographing the basins.

Let's conclude the day with a visit to the Trapeang Sangkae community who will take us to visit the mangroves and inform us about the efforts made to preserve and reconstruct these true natural barriers. Then return to the resort and free time to enjoy the end of the day in the peaceful town of Kep. Check-in at the hotel and free time. Day without English-speaking guide
