The spirit of travel

Leaves crackle beneath your feet as local guides trace an invisible trail through the primary forest of Ratanakiri. Three days of camping in the heart of Virachey National Park lead you to crystalline waterfalls and villages of ethnic minorities, far from any civilization. Morning coffee, served in a bamboo cup carved on site, accompanies the awakening of tropical birds and the first light filtering through the canopy.

From this wild northeast, the descent towards the Mekong reveals another face of Cambodge: the tumultuous waters of Steung Treng where kayaks glide between giant aerial roots, then the lost temples of Preah Khan Kampong Svay, swallowed by the jungle for centuries. The pink sandstone towers of Banteay Srei and the endless galleries of Angkor Wat complete this immersion into Khmer art, from forgotten sanctuaries to universal wonders. Between two sites, the floating village of Kampong Kleang unveils daily life on the waters of Tonlé Sap.

This journey unites the heritage of the Khmer empire and Cambodgian nature in its rawest form, where the Tampuan and Kreung ethnicities perpetuate their age-old traditions. A journey that leaves the imprint of Ratanakiri's red earth under your nails and the memory of sleeping temples in your mind.

Phnom Penh, vibrant capital

Phnom Penh → Phnom Penh

40min4 km

Day trip by tuk-tuk

Let's first visit the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda, true jewels of Khmer architecture built in the middle of the 19th century.

The dress code for the Royal Palace is quite strict: shoulders and knees must be covered.

We then visit the National Museum and discover one of the most important collections of Khmer art: 14,000 sculptures and ethnographic objects, mostly from the temples of Angkor. This jewel of Khmer architecture was built between 1917 and 1920, and features a magnificent interior courtyard, a truly lush garden surrounded by the museum's unique pieces.

Visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21), a former high school in Phnom Penh that the Khmer Rouge transformed into an interrogation, torture and death centre. It is the largest detention and torture centre under the Pol Pot regime that will reveal a very painful chapter in Cambodia's history.

Now converted into a museum, the former S21 Prison reminds every visitor of the atrocities committed in Cambodia during the terrible years of communist dictatorship. No fewer than 17,000 people were inmates of Tuol Sleng prison, and only 7 survived and can today recount the abuse they suffered. A visit to S21 can be a disturbing and poignant experience that some may not be able to bear. Nevertheless, it is one of the keys to understanding the hell and madness in which Cambodia locked itself during these years of terror.

Spend the day visiting one or more iconic markets in the city:

- The Central Market, known as Phsar Thmei, is a vast art deco dome-shaped building, brimming with life and colors. It's a lively place where you'll find a wide variety of products, ranging from clothing to fresh food products, as well as artisanal souvenirs.

- The Russian Market, or Phsar Toul Tom Poung, is a popular and vibrant market renowned for its varied offerings of clothing, accessories and local products. It's also an excellent place to discover authentic Cambodian food products and souvenirs at affordable prices.

- The O'Russei market, also known as Phsar O'Russei, is a busy shopping center where you'll mainly find wholesale products, clothing and various items. This market, less touristy than others, offers an authentic experience of daily life in Phnom Penh and is ideal for finding unique treasures at interesting prices.

Attention: Markets close early. Expect to see stalls closing from 4:30 PM.

Then, transfer by road to Steung Treng, a quiet small town situated on a sandy bank overlooking the Mekong, at the confluence with the Sé Kong River. Hotel check-in.

We stay at the Mekong Bird Resort, a charming small family establishment nestled in nature and on the waterfront.

At the resort, board a boat to discover the Mékong and its trees with gigantic aerial roots. You may have the chance to spot its many water birds such as the lapwing, river tern, stone-curlew or the Mékong wagtail, a species discovered in 2001.

The majestic temples of Angkor

Day visit by tuk tuk of the wonderful Angkor temples located around and inside the Angkor Thom enclosure. We discover in particular Angkor Wat, symbol of the peak of the Khmer Empire during the Angkorian era.

Within the Angkor Thom enclosure, discover Bayon and its numerous towers with gigantic faces, Baphuon and its gigantic 40m reclining Buddha statue, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of the Elephants and its great diversity of sculptures as well as the Terrace of the Leper King.

Let us conclude with Ta Prohm famous for its immense trees with tentacular aerial roots. We can end this day with a sunset either at Srah Srang, or from the heights of Pre Rup or Phnom Bakheng if you are ready to brave the crowds (warning: Phnom Bakheng is off-limits to children under 12 years old and authorities limit access to 300 people at sunset, thus creating a queue)

Due to an already busy schedule, we intentionally skip a few secondary temples on the small circuit such as Banteay Kdei, Thommanon, Chau Say Tevoda or Ta Keo. If you wish to visit these sites, do not hesitate to inform your guide at the start of the day so he can best arrange the schedule.

Possibility to do the visits in reverse order to avoid the crowds. Simply let your guide know at the beginning of the day.

The temples are sacred places, avoid short clothing, you must cover your shoulders and wear long pants or a long skirt.

In order to preserve these fragile monuments, it is forbidden to touch the sculptures or to sit on temple elements.

In Cambodian culture, it is offensive to misbehave inside a sacred place, calm and respect are the watchwords.

It is inadvisable to buy items or sweets from child vendors, this only encourages begging and truancy, prefer a donation to an association if it is close to your heart.

If you wish to photograph the monks (called Bonzes), you must obtain their permission beforehand. Furthermore, you must never touch them, they have the right to touch you but not the other way around.

The River of 1000 Lingas and the Pink Sandstone Citadel

After approximately 45 minutes of driving, we begin the day with a visit to the Angkor Center for Biodiversity Protection. We will be able to observe the efforts made by local and international teams to protect threatened local species: turtles and other reptiles, rare birds and mammals. Children and animal lovers will be delighted by this educational and awareness-raising visit.

We then begin the short hiking trail needed to reach the Kbal Spean site nicknamed "the temple under water", 49 km north of Angkor. Ruins of temples dating from the 9th century border a river whose bed is scattered with sculpted lingas. A nurturing source for Angkor, the waters of Kbal Spean once irrigated the rice fields of the ancient city. In its bed, the Khmers sculpted Shiva statues and stone squares used to bless the waters before they reached the Royal City. The site was discovered in 1968 by ethnologist Jean Boulbet from Ariège, and following in his footsteps you can wander along the lush banks. A small waterfall near the sacred protected site will allow us to cool off and even swim (bring a small towel).

Very accessible hike of approximately 1.5 km (or 3 km round trip) with a small elevation gain over the last 700 meters.

Bring hiking shoes or sneakers as the trail is quite rocky.

Kbal Spean → Banteay Srei

20min14 km

After lunch, let's continue with a visit to Banteay Srey, a temple on a human scale compared to the gigantic Angkor Wat or Bayon. This pink sandstone temple nicknamed "The Citadel of Women" is known for the refinement of the bas-reliefs and sculptures that adorn its walls and columns.

If we have energy left, we can end the day with a visit to Banteay Samre temple or return to the hotel directly.

In the evening, we attend an unforgettable circus show with incredibly talented artists! The circus show starts at 8pm but it is recommended to arrive 20-30 minutes early. Some activities/shops are also available from 6pm including a small traditional Khmer dance performance. Category B seating included
