Kampong Pluk Floating Village
The Tonle Sap Lake teems with abundant flora and fauna. But Southeast Asia's largest body of water belongs not only to cranes, pelicans, crocodiles, and mangrove trees. It also welcomes five villages in the province of Siem Reap, including Kampong Pluk, situated about twenty kilometers away.
Here, authenticity reigns supreme. It is far from being the most visited of the five villages. This offers a genuine sense of naturalness and coherence to your visit.
The Floating Village
Your excursion begins aboard a traditional wooden boat that navigates the Tonle Sap Lake to reach Kampong Pluk village. The village floats on the water, with stilts supporting the houses measuring between six and seven meters in height, allowing dwellings to remain well above water level during the rainy season. In the dry season, these posts become fully visible and impress with their sheer size.
You navigate through the heart of the village near the school, temple, houses, fishing workshops, the national gendarmerie station, and even a church. During the rainy season, inhabitants travel exclusively by waterway. You'll notice many young children boarding small boats to attend school. This visit is truly enchanting and completely breaks the mold of traditional land-based villages.
The Mangrove Jungle
After exploring Kampong Pluk's center, you have the opportunity to venture a few dozen meters beyond to discover a magnificent mangrove jungle. This biome represents submerged jungles, akin to alluvial forests but distinctly marshy in character. The trees that form these canopies have multiple roots that intertwine at the base, becoming visible only during dry periods. You explore them by small boat, observing these mangroves that thrive in this remarkably unique environment. Numerous species of monkeys and birds swing among their heights. Tranquility reigns amid this mysterious vegetation, commanding your complete attention throughout your entire visit.
