Phnom Kampong Trach Cave

Located about 38 km from Kampot, in the Kampong Trach district, the Phnom Kampong Trach caves are a series of large karstic cavities nestled at the base of the mountain. For the local Buddhist population, they are sacred and regarded as natural temples. For visitors, they offer a unique and rewarding caving experience.

Visiting the Phnom Kampong Trach Caves

From Kampot, a 20-minute drive through the picturesque Cambodian countryside will bring you to Kampong Trach Mountain, at the foot of which stands a Buddhist monastery. The entrance to the caves lies within the monastery grounds, marking the beginning of an exploration full of surprises.

You’ll wander through a maze of chambers where hidden statues and makeshift altars share space with stunning natural rock formations. At the heart of this vast cave complex lies a spectacular open-air clearing created by the collapse of the rock ceiling. In this bright and sacred space, considered a temple by locals, you’ll find an impressive reclining Buddha statue.

A bit further inside, you’ll come across a small underground lake that might tempt you to take a dip. During certain times of the year, the Phnom Kampong Trach caves host religious ceremonies attended by locals and pilgrims alike. If you wish to attend, be sure to dress respectfully (shoulders and knees covered).

How to get there

From Kampot, follow Route 33 toward Kep, then turn off about 7 km after the White Horse Monument. If you're not traveling by private car or minivan with a driver, you can also get there by tuk-tuk.
