The village of Preah Rumkel - Guide Cambodia - Seripheap

The village of Preah Rumkel

The commune of Preah Rumkel is located in the northernmost part of Cambodia, close to the border with Laos. Travelers who choose to stay in the villages of this commune seek authenticity and wish to stray from the beaten path. These areas remain far from modernity, with traditional houses connected by a single main dirt road. It is the perfect place for those wanting to immerse themselves in the daily life of local communities and learn more about the lifestyle of the inhabitants.

The Mekong as a backdrop

Situated in the province of Steung Treng, around 60 kilometers north of the capital of the same name, the village cluster of Preah Rumkel borders the legendary Mekong River on its western bank. The natural and serene view at sunrise is invigorating. Numerous river islands, such as Koh Kop and Koh Lon, are accessible from the commune. These islands boast sandy beaches, making them ideal spots for a relaxing half-day, where visitors can enjoy a delicious snack amidst nature.

You can also, with a guide, travel north towards the famous Lao archipelago of Si Phan Don on the Mekong. This area literally borders the Cambodia-Laos border and offers a breathtaking spectacle, particularly during the monsoon season. Waterfalls are plentiful here. However, be cautious not to swim in the river during this period, as its volume is increased by 20 times, and it records the fastest natural water flow in the world, with 10 million liters of water per second. At this point, its flow is twice that of Niagara Falls. The width of the torrents expands compared to the river during the dry season, reaching nearly 10 km. The sight is stunning and will leave you in awe for a day.

Bucolic activities

Back in the village, you can, accompanied by your guide, interact with the local communities during meals, for example. You will learn more about the customs and local habits, which can seem mysterious if you don’t take the time to explore them. Dinner is an ideal opportunity to forge strong connections with the villagers, who will appreciate your attention.

The next day, you can continue your explorations near the commune. Jungles and small mountains dot the landscape, offering great hiking opportunities. You will experience the adventure of a tropical jungle or have the chance to observe the flights of birds that are protected by the local communities.
