Getting Around Cambodia

Many transportation options are available to help you move between or within the various cities of Cambodge throughout your stay. Choose the mode that best suits your preferences and destination.

Two and Four-Wheeled Taxis

There are three types of taxis: moto-dops, tuk-tuks, and taxis.

Moto-dops

Moto-dops are simple motorcycles or scooters. You ride behind the driver, and helmets are typically available upon request. This mode of transport costs around $2 on average.

Tuk-tuks

A tuk-tuk is a cart attached to a motorcycle. You can easily fit four people inside. The tuk-tuk is slightly more expensive than a moto-dop, but considerably more comfortable and less risky. Fares range from $2 to $5 depending on your journey's distance. It's often possible to negotiate a $1 to $2 discount. If the driver refuses to lower the price, try walking away—he'll likely catch up to accept your offer. Keep in mind that in-city transportation is often covered by travel agency packages. Recently, newer tuk-tuks have become available. These are closer to tricycles, with the motorcycle and passenger compartment forming a single unit. Their fares are metered. There are also apps to book your tuk-tuk, such as CamGo, Pass App Taxi, or Uber. The tuk-tuk will pick you up directly from your location after you confirm your request by phone. App-based tuk-tuk fares are often $2 to $3 cheaper than street hailing. This method is very convenient when you're unsure how to explain your destination. You can also opt for a taxi, which is arguably safer once night falls.

Taxis

As in Europe, traditional taxis exist in two forms: sedans or pickup trucks. Fares vary depending on your destination and transport duration. For example, traveling from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville by taxi might cost $50. The Uber app is also available for taxis as of June 2017.

Buses

Buses remain the cheapest option for long journeys. A bus trip from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville costs $10 per person for 5 to 6 hours of travel covering more than 200 kilometers. At this price point, you'll find companies catering to international travelers, offering relatively modern and comfortable buses, sometimes even including a small bottle of water and snacks. You can find slightly cheaper bus tickets with Khmer companies at $7 or $8 for the same Sihanoukville route. These buses are less comfortable, make more stops, and travel more slowly. Be aware that buses don't always run on schedule and breakdowns can occur, though this is rarer with modern buses. Some companies offer overnight journeys.

Trains

Only one railway line exists in Cambodge. It follows this route: Phnom Penh–Takeo–Kampot–Sihanoukville and vice versa. Expect roughly 8 hours for a Phnom Penh–Sihanoukville journey for approximately $7.

Boats

Boat transportation is expensive and may only be available for certain routes depending on the season. Traveling down the Tonle Sap from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap is only possible when water levels permit. As a reference, a ticket from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap costs around $35 on average, with the journey taking roughly 6 hours. Due to their cost, boat trips have increasingly become more of a tourist attraction than a practical transportation method.

Air Travel

It's possible to travel by plane within the country. For example, the airline Cambodia Air Angkor operates daily flights between Sihanoukville and Siem Reap, and between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
