Mobile Phone
For several years now, Cambodia's telephone network has been developing steadily. To make calls in Cambodia, simply get a Cambodian SIM card. Prices at the airport are aligned with those in city shops. Moreover, all operators are conveniently located in the same area, making it easy to shop and compare without having to visit multiple stores. We recommend one of the following two operators:
- Cellcard: more advantageous for using the internet
- Smart: more advantageous for calls
SIM card prices range from $0.50 to $5, with or without a small credit allowance. You only need to present your passport to obtain one. Be careful, however, not to buy just any SIM card at the airport, as some are considerably more expensive than standard prices. With Cellcard, for example, the "tourist" SIM is free but the $3 credit gives you "only" 3 GB of data. The ideal approach is to get a standard SIM (2,000 Riels or $0.50), then recharge it with $2 or $3, and finally subscribe to the Big Love plan, which gives you 10 GB for $1/week. Each week, your credit will be automatically debited $1 to renew the plan. To recharge your account, simply buy recharge vouchers ($1, $2, etc.) when your credit runs out. These recharges are available in most small shops. The credit validity period depends on the recharge amount. For example, a $1 recharge is valid for 1 week with Cellcard; $2 for 2 weeks, $5 for 1 month, and so on. Don't hesitate to ask the agent selling you the SIM for more details.
Internet
Numerous internet cafes are present in major cities. Their rates range from 2,000 to 9,000 Riels per hour. Also note that most hotels, guesthouses, bars, and restaurants have free WiFi networks with varying connection quality.
Post Offices
Post offices in Cambodia are relatively efficient. For sending a simple letter like a postcard or correspondence to Europe, it costs around 5,000 Riels ($1.25) and takes approximately 2 weeks to arrive at its destination.
