Electricity in Cambodia

A significant budgetary burden

If you decide to settle in Cambodia for the medium or long term, be aware that electricity comes at a cost, and it's not insignificant. The price of electricity typically ranges from 750 to 850 riels per kilowatt-hour (kWh), but some landlords may inflate the price up to 1000 riels, or 25 cents per kWh, in order to make a profit. If that’s the case, don't hesitate to negotiate with them. An agreement can usually be reached! Such rates should be considered in relation to the low average income of the population. It goes without saying that the average Khmer does not use air conditioning at home!

Voltage, Plugs, and Adapters

The voltage in Cambodia is 220 volts/50 Hz, the same as in France. The plugs are also identical, though some hotels are equipped with type G (British) plugs. If you need to purchase one or more adapters, you can easily find them in stores or markets.

An unreliable service

Despite a nearly 75% improvement in electricity production in Cambodia in recent years, power outages remain frequent, especially during the hot months. To address this, most hotels, restaurants, and some buildings have backup generators. Power cuts can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. We recommend bringing a flashlight with you in case of an outage during the night.
