Angkor Wat is expecting more than 3,000 participants this weekend (December 16, 2017) to celebrate 25 years since the Angkor site's inscription on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

For the occasion, the UYFC (Union of Cambodian Youth Federations) and APSARA Authorities are organizing a historic photography event in collaboration with the city of Siem Reap. The celebration will take place on Saturday at Angkor Wat temple and is expected to draw more than 3,000 participants.

The Angkor Site Inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1992

The Angkor site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on December 14, 1992. It stands as one of Southeast Asia's principal archaeological sites. The Angkor site is dotted with temples, hydraulic structures, and communication networks that reflect the complexity of an exceptional civilization. Temples such as Angkor Vat, the Bayon, Preah Khan, and Ta Prohm showcase the finest examples of Khmer architecture.

Angkor is undoubtedly a major site that perfectly embodies the cultural, religious, and symbolic values of the country. It is therefore unsurprising that the site has been recognized for its significant architectural, archaeological, and artistic importance to Cambodge. Since its inscription, UNESCO has had to address numerous challenges concerning Angkor, particularly regarding its preservation. With the increase in tourist flow, UNESCO has had to develop strategies for better visitor distribution in order to safeguard these precious historical monuments.
