Theam’s House workshop

Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood of Siem Reap, Theam’s House is the home, workshop, training center, and gallery of Cambodian artist and designer Lim Muy Theam. At once a living and working space, this beautifully crafted traditional residence is open to the public. A visit offers a unique opportunity to admire a remarkable collection of art and handicrafts that reflect Cambodia’s rich cultural identity, while also discovering the work of a passionate and talented man who masterfully blends tradition with modernity.

A bit of history

Born in Takeo, Theam was still a child when he arrived in France in 1978, one of thousands of refugees fleeing Cambodia. A graduate of the prestigious École Boulle and the Beaux-Arts in Paris, he returned 15 years later, determined to contribute to the rebuilding of his homeland, which had been devastated by years of war. Ever since, he has worked tirelessly to revive Cambodian craftsmanship. After founding Artisans d’Angkor, he devoted himself to a more personal project: transforming his home into a space that showcases Khmer art and craft, trains young apprentices, and supports his own ongoing creative work—all under one roof.

Visiting Theam’s House

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be charmed by the peaceful and harmonious atmosphere of this extraordinary place. Sculptures greet you in the garden, where a majestic banyan tree stands proudly at the center, surrounded by lush plants and reflective ponds. As you take in the elegant traditional wooden architecture of the house, you’ll be welcomed by the gallery’s director, who will guide you through the visit.

Your tour begins with Theam’s private museum, where antique Khmer artworks are displayed alongside his own creations. You’ll then move on to the workshops, where you can observe young artisans—personally trained by Theam—working with remarkable skill across a range of materials such as wood, stone, ceramic, silk, and bronze. Finally, you’ll reach the painting gallery, where Theam’s exceptional talent and technical mastery are truly on full display.

At the end of your journey through Theam’s creative world, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase paintings and beautifully crafted decorative items—with international shipping available, including to France.
