6% Rise in Cambodian Milled Rice Exports

Cambodian rice maintains its export growth trajectory in early 2019, with a 6% rise in the first quarter and China remaining the dominant market for khmer rice.

April 12, 2019 The single window service secretariat has released a report confirming a 6% increase in Cambodian milled rice exports for the first quarter of 2019.

Even as the prospect of withdrawing from the Everything but Arms (EBA) agreement looms over Cambodge, an outcome expected within eighteen months, the kingdom continues to boost exports of its national staple.

China Leads as Top Importer

Milled rice exports reached 170,821 tonnes in these first three months of the year. The country had exported 630,000 tonnes throughout all of 2018. According to AKP, China is Cambodge's number one client. Chinese buyers purchased 75,214 tonnes of khmer rice between January and March. Far ahead of France with 20,000 tonnes and Gabon with 12,122 tonnes.

The Khmer news agency reports that "approximately 89% of exported rice was fragrant rice, while long-grain white rice and parboiled rice represented 9.14% and 1.44% respectively."
