Learning to Kitesurf in Cambodia is Possible!

Cambodia's first kiteboarding school, Cambodia Kiteboarding welcomes both beginners and experienced riders at Kampot, on a vast, shallow spot designed for safe learning.

Cambodia Kiteboarding is the first organization to offer kitesurfing in Cambodge. Founded by Dutch instructor Frank van Zoggel seven years ago, the school, based on Kampong Bay in Kampot, a spot perfectly suited for training, offers courses for everyone, from complete beginners to advanced riders. Frank has also been organizing the Cambodian Kitesurfing Championship every July for the past five years, welcoming athletes from across Southeast Asia and beyond.

Frank van Zoggel is a certified instructor with the International Kiteboarding Organization and applies the standards established by the organization. The institution promotes teaching the discipline within a carefully studied and approved safety framework, while continuously improving it. He uses his expertise to develop Cambodia Kiteboarding, whose practice site is located downstream of the Teuk Chhou River, right in the middle of Kampong Bay, facing the sea. The location offers a stunning view of the horizon and Phu Quoc Island, overlooked by the imposing Bokor Mountain. Here you'll learn to practice this sport which involves, after stepping onto a wakeboard, letting yourself glide across the water thanks to a kite held firmly, attached to your harness, and pulled by the wind.

An Ideal Spot

The warm, shallow waters of Kampong Bay provide a perfectly suited location for kitesurfing. These conditions allow you to make the most of your sessions, and the vastness of the area promotes learning—mistakes are less problematic and the space between different practitioners ensures a smooth learning experience.

This somewhat secluded spot also has the advantage of being usable throughout the year, as the wind encounters no obstacles. Winds are very strong at altitude from November to March, and the weather at this time is clear, dry, and sunny—rather pleasant conditions for practicing. From April to October, the wind moves closer to shore and allows the most experienced kitesurfers to enjoy greater pleasure, but with the rainy season occurring during this period, beginners may find it more challenging to make the most of it. It's during this time of year that the club organizes a competition every July bringing together experienced kitesurfers. The event shines a spotlight on this school, Cambodia's only one.

To reach Kampong Bay and participate in the courses offered by the club, you'll need to meet the instructors at the meeting point 7 kilometers upstream on the Teuk Chhou River. The team will guide you on a boat to reach sea level with all the necessary equipment. This 30-minute journey will allow you to get to know the instructors better.

All Levels Welcome

Learning to Kitesurf in Cambodia is Possible!

The school welcomes everyone. If you've never kitesurfed before and want to try an introductory session, you'll learn how to prepare your equipment, control and secure the kite on dry land, get on the board once in the water, orient yourself relative to wind direction, and navigate from left to right. After several sessions, or if you already know how to handle a kite board, you can move on to jumping and flying safely. You'll learn how to master landings, interpret wind force and direction, and even study the proper technique when practicing alongside other kitesurfers nearby.
