Koh Kong's tourism development is accelerating with a project exceeding $500 million, presented by authorities as a driver for employment and provincial reputation.

The project named Tourism, Ecological, Marine and International (TEMI) was approved on Monday by the Council for the Development of Cambodge (CDC). The Chinese group Union City Development Group Co LTD is spearheading it.

The project is part of a tourism program that includes TEMI in Kiri Sakor and the construction of the Dara Sakor Seashore Resort in Botum Sakor, in Koh Kong province. The Chinese group holds a 450 km² concession there (45,000 hectares). TEMI, a project costing $500.4 million, will likely be realized through a 5-star hotel with 800 rooms, a golf course, bungalows, villas, a shopping center, and theme parks.

A Project for Employment, According to Authorities

More than 5,000 jobs are expected to be created upon the complex's opening. Sok Sothy, Vice-Governor of Koh Kong province, assured the Phnom Penh Post that this project will enable "the promotion of the province's image, the creation of thousands of jobs, and increased income for local residents." This coastal zone, like all of Koh Kong province, has experienced increasing hotel and guesthouse construction in recent years, attracting Thai tourists due to proximity to the border, as well as Chinese visitors. Khmer tourists today favor the beaches of Kep and Kampot, notably because the mountainous road toward Koh Kong is lengthy and hazardous. A new road is currently being developed between Battambang and Kiri Sakor.
