Packing Your Suitcase
What should I pack in my suitcase?
Before traveling to a country like Cambodge, it's essential to know what to pack to avoid any unexpected surprises.
If you're planning a road trip, opt for a travel backpack rather than a large suitcase. However, if you're staying in one city, choose a sturdy suitcase—airport baggage handlers aren't always gentle with luggage.
The Suitcase
We recommend packing the following items:
- A small daypack for personal effects such as your phone, wallet, and a small water bottle
- Antimalarial medication if you're traveling to remote regions or the jungle
- Medication for intestinal issues
- SPF 50 sunscreen (very expensive locally) and aloe vera cream for sunburns
- Insect repellent spray and mosquito bite cream
- Body wash, shampoo, and moisturizer—these products are either pricey or poorly suited for fair skin in Cambodge
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Sunglasses
- Long clothing for temple visits
- A raincoat and/or umbrella for the monsoon season (June–July to September–October)
- Hiking shoes
- Quality socks
- Flip-flops
- One or more swimsuits
- A hat or baseball cap
- A camera
- A deck of cards
- A notebook and pen
- Books and music for long journeys
- Your passport with one or more photocopies in case of loss
- Your driving license and a road map if you plan to rent a vehicle
- ID photos for your visa
- US dollars—smaller bills ($1 and $5 notes, especially for tuk-tuks) are preferable
- A flashlight in case of power outages (frequent in Cambodge)
- A knife, lighter, and string are always handy to have
- A water bottle for hiking
The First-Aid Kit
There's no need to bring your entire medicine cabinet with you. It will only weigh you down, as most basic medications (paracetamol, ibuprofen, etc.) are widely available if you're passing through major cities.
