Passapp, the tuk-tuk app
Following Phnom Penh, PassApp now makes getting around Siem Reap easier too. A useful solution for exploring the city, reaching the temples, or getting back safely after an evening downtown.
Just a stone's throw from the Tonlé Sap Lake, the city of Siem Reap serves as a gateway for visitors to the Angkor archaeological complex. Compared to the capital Phnom Penh, Siem Reap is a true haven of peace without being a sleepy town. Of late, the city of Siem Reap has experienced an incredible tourism boom, and as the number of vehicles, cars, and motorcycles has grown considerably, getting around is no longer as easy as it was years ago. Yet with the Passapp application, the city is riding the wave of innovation and now offers several options for those who don't own a vehicle or prefer not to venture driving through congested streets.
What is PassApp?
There are several choices like Exnet Taxi for taxis and Go Tuk Tuk. But first and foremost, what is a tuk-tuk? It's a small trailer pulled by a small-engine motorcycle and converted with seats and a roof. Since the tuk-tuk moves fairly slowly, it's a pleasant mode of transport that lets you explore the city, carry some luggage, and is ideal for traveling without rushing and admiring the scenery and surroundings along the way. The only catch? Until recently, there were no fixed rates and you had to negotiate upfront—the least pleasant step for tourists and drivers alike, especially as the number of tuk-tuks has grown and drivers face competition from taxis and moto-dops. Fortunately, a revolutionary application emerged: Passapp Taxi! The app is indeed very useful for tourists who don't know their location or don't speak Khmer. How Passapp works is simple. When you open the app, you'll be shown a map of your region retrieved by your GPS. Simply tap "Set Pickup" at the bottom of your screen and the app will send a request to nearby tuk-tuks. You'll then be notified when a driver has accepted your request, and all you have to do is wait for them to pick you up!
Good to know
Good to know: the app charges the first kilometer at a flat rate of 3,000 riels (0.75 USD) for tuk-tuks and 5,000 riels (1.25 USD) for taxis. Each additional kilometer costs 2,300 riels (0.60 USD) for taxis and 1,400 riels (0.35 USD) for tuk-tuks.
Passapp revolutionizes transportation in Phnom Penh

Launched in 2016 in Phnom Penh, the app immediately achieved tremendous success—and for good reason. Like Uber, it now makes finding and booking a tuk-tuk easy without having to negotiate the fare since it's fixed in advance. The advantages of this app are clear. No more haggling between drivers and tourists over the price. No more long waits looking for an available tuk-tuk. And beyond consumer convenience, the system also introduced flexibility for new drivers joining the PassApp community to supplement their income.
Passapp arrives in Siem Reap
It's a fact: most travelers come to Siem Reap for one thing alone: to visit Angkor. While exploring the main temples is practically essential for any traveler passing through the city, know that the city offers far more than visits to the Khmer Empire ruins. Wandering through the old market, exploring Ta Phnom Temple, admiring the floating villages, and discovering Angkor Night Market are among the activities to do in Siem Reap. The Passapp application is a useful ally that will make your stay easier. PassApp Taxi is currently operational in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. The founder states that other regions are still under feasibility study. Good news for residents elsewhere! PassApp Taxi is available on Appstore and Google Play.
