Beneath the Phare Circus tent, the circus becomes theater, dance, music and acrobatics. A vivid experience that showcases the talent of a new generation of Cambodian performers.

15 Apr. 2018 Ever dreamed of experiencing a circus performance unlike any you've seen before? When we hear the word "circus," our minds typically conjure images of tigers, clowns, and childhood wonder. Yet at "Phare Circus," the more fitting term would be "show"—because multiple artistic disciplines such as music, theater, and dance intertwine throughout the performance. Here, the circus isn't merely entertainment for children. Adult audiences are equally captivated by the extraordinary talent and boundless energy of the association's performers.

An Organization Dedicated to Education

Since 1994, Phare Ponleu Selpak Association (PPSA), or "The Brightness of the Arts" in English, based in Battambang, has harnessed art as a catalyst for social and human development. Their mission? To provide artistic education to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, offering them career opportunities across various artistic fields.

Serious social challenges—drug abuse, domestic violence, and more—continue to confront many children daily. This is why the association actively participates in programs protecting young people. It also provides them with a solid education in the performing arts. Today, approximately 1,500 young people benefit from the programs established by Phare Circus.

A Fair-Trade Khmer Craft Shop

Before entering the tent where the performance unfolds, you'll discover the association's shop along the way. From Khmer jewelry to clothing and home décor, you'll find every kind of souvenir to bring back from your trip to Cambodia—each purchase also supports the association. This space allows circus students to earn additional income through the sale of their handcrafted items displayed in the shop.

A Circus Performance at the Crossroads of Tradition and Modernity

Siem Reap: "Phare Circus", A Circus Like No Other

Roughly ten performers welcome audiences multiple times per week and invite you to (re)discover the circus in ways you've never experienced. For roughly an hour of surprises and laughter beneath the tents of Siem Reap or Battambang, you'll be transported by the intimate, warm atmosphere of the show. Though the lineups change regularly, every performance honors the codes of traditional circus arts: juggling, hand balancing, trapeze, acrobatic feats, and more. Each show also features singing, dance, and music composed by the Khmer artists themselves, all woven into stories that address contemporary issues.

Today, the reputation of Phare Circus performances continues to grow thanks to the exceptional artistry of the association's young performers. It is therefore essential to book your tickets several days ahead of your chosen performance date.
